"It takes the generosity of sponsors"

I am a mother to four boys who I am so proud of because they have grown into young leaders who are men in service of and with others. I am also a grandmother to two precious grandchildren! I am a nurse and have worked in a variety of clinical nursing positions and taught as a clinical and skills lab instructor. I currently enjoy my work as the advising coordinator for the nursing program at Regis University, Denver, Colorado.

Education is so important to success and the ability to be a productive member of society. I learned from my son, David, after his first trip volunteering at the Kinship House in Uganda that Ugandan children can only attend school if their family or a sponsor covers the costs of tuition, books, uniforms, and sometimes necessary room and board. Kin Initiative generously takes in children who do not have a family that is able to care for their basic needs, but it takes the generosity of sponsors to cover the education costs for most of the children. I wanted to help by sponsoring a child and David shared the unique stories of each of the children and their beautiful pictures. He told me how eager the children were to learn when he taught them math and that they would beg him for homework. Wow! I never thought kids would be so eager to get homework!! I chose a child named John. It was so hard to choose from many deserving children, but John’s strong interest when he grows up to serve others by continuing to work to support orphans and children from families that do not have the means to care for them made me feel a special connection to John. I have been sponsoring John’s education for 6 years now. John is working so hard and I love hearing each semester about his progress and dedication! It is such an honor to have the opportunity to be a part of John’s educational journey and I know he is going to make the world a better place for others!!
